Summer doesn't end all at once — it loosens its grip slowly, evening by evening. Obon arrives as the season begins to turn: Japan's most beloved festival, when families travel home, ancestors are welcomed back, and the whole country pauses together. Fires are lit as guiding lights for returning spirits — an ancient ritual that fills the season with warmth and meaning. It is a time for gathering, and few things gather people like a grill. Late-summer robata leans into the season's final richness — darker cuts, earthier vegetables, flavors that have had all summer to deepen. Binchotan charcoal does what it does best—drawing out char and smoke from everything it touches. The vegetables are at their fullest, the meats at their most satisfying. One last fire, one last feast — summer's slow, smoky farewell.
